Not only that: in India there are almost 1,400 pharmaceutical plants approved by the WHO . They produce about 60,000 generic brands from 60 different therapeutic categories. With more than 3,000 pharmaceutical companies in operation and a strong network of more than 10,500 manufacturing laboratories, it is safe to say that India is the great pharmacy on the planet.
India’s pharmaceutical industry was valued in 2019 at US $ 36 billion. Generic drugs, with a 71% market share, form the largest segment of its production.

Cadila Healthcare
It is the largest pharmaceutical company in India. It was founded in 1952 by Ramanbhai Patel and is based in Ahmedabad. and has become the largest pharmaceutical company in India.
Cadila Healthcare has ten manufacturing plants across the country in different locations around the country: Navi Mumbai, Ankleshwar, Changodar, Goa, Vatva, Baddi, Dabhasa, Vadodara, Dabhasa and Patalganga.
Torrent pharma
It also has its headquarters in Ahmedabad and manufacturing plants in different parts of the country. Torrent Pharma has specialized in the manufacture of medicines for medical treatments of the central nervous system (CNS), gastrointestinal disorders, analgesics and antibiotics.
Cipla
With spectacular growth in recent decades, CIPLA, established in Mumbai in 1935, has become one of the most profitable pharmaceutical companies in India.
The firm develops drugs to treat various diseases such as depression, diabetes or respiratory diseases . Its total sales figure is around 7 billion rupees a year (about 78 million euros). It has seven production centers in which more than 22,000 employees work.
Dr. Reddys Labs
Undoubtedly one of the main pharmaceutical companies in India, with a notable international projection. The company was founded in 1984 by Dr. Anji Reddy . It is headquartered in Hyderabad and manufactures more than 180 drugs as well as more than 50 active pharmaceutical ingredients.
There are seven Dr. Reddys Labs manufacturing plants in India. Outside the country, the firm has laboratories in Russia and distributes the medicines of the Belgian pharmaceutical company UCB SA in South Asia.
Lupine Ltd
Its sales figure is more than 5,000 million rupees a year. Lupine was born in 1968 thanks to the initiative of Desh Bandhu Gupta , one of the most renowned researchers in the country. The company currently sells its products to more than 70 countries around the world, including South Africa, Japan, Australia and the European Union.
Aurobindo Pharma
Founded in 1988, Aurobindo Pharma Limited deals with both the manufacturing and production of generic drugs and active ingredients. He has specialized in six specific therapeutic areas: Central Nervous System, cardiovascular, antibiotic, antiretroviral, antiallergic and gastroenterological products.
The company exports its products to more than 120 countries and has a turnover of more than Rs 4 billion a year.
Sun Pharma
Another of Idnia’s leading pharmaceutical companies, founded by Dilip Shanghvi in 1983 in the Vapi area of Gujarat. Initially Sun Pharma was dedicated to producing five types of drugs specifically oriented to the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Later, the company acquired the pharmaceutical Ranbaxy , increasing its capital and expanding its production.
70% of Sun Pharmaceutical drugs are sold in the United States. In recent years the company has started a strong expansion that has led it to open plants in countries such as Mexico, Israel or Brazil.
